Imagine a world where AI-generated content reigns supreme, where machines can spin fantastical tales and write articles with ease. It all sounds like a dream, right? Well, for one startup called Latitude, that dream quickly turned into a nightmare when their AI Dungeon game became a hit and the costs of maintaining it skyrocketed.
Latitude's CEO, Nick Walton, recalls spending nearly $200,000 a month on OpenAI's GPT language technology and Amazon Web Services just to keep up with the millions of user queries it needed to process each day. In fact, the company was spending so much on AI that they joked about having as many AI employees as human employees.
But Latitude wasn't the only one feeling the financial strain of generative AI technologies. The cost to develop and maintain the software can be extraordinarily high, both for the firms that develop the underlying technologies and those that use the AI to power their own software. It's a structural cost that differs from previous computing booms, and even after the software is built or trained, it still requires a huge amount of computing power to run large language models.
So what does this mean for the future of AI applications? Could the high cost of computing put a damper on the current boom? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure - the cost of AI is no joke. In fact, analysts estimate that the critical process of training a large language model such as OpenAI's GPT-3 could cost more than $4 million. That's a lot of money for something that's not even human!
But let's not get too down on AI just yet. After all, it's still an amazing technology that has the potential to transform the world. And who knows, maybe one day AI-generated content will be so good that we won't even be able to tell the difference between human and machine writing. Until then, we'll just have to keep an eye on those AI bills and hope for the best!
🚀 Fans Embrace AI-Powered Character Chatbots for Immersive Entertainment
The world of online fandom has recently protested against disruptive technologies such as crypto and the widespread use of art for AI training. However, fans are now embracing AI-powered technology, particularly in the form of Character.AI, an app that allows users to speak with AI-generated characters. The app's founders aim to alleviate global loneliness and provide educational and therapeutic use cases for their custom generative text model. Character.AI's customizability allows fans to create their own versions of a character or chat with a bot already made by another fan, making it an addictive and interactive platform. The app censors NSFW content, which has led some users to switch to a rival service, Pygmalion.AI. Despite this, Character.AI has become a logical extension of fandom roleplaying, allowing fans to creatively inhabit personas and interact with their favorite characters.
